Shnat 5772 first report!

This has been our first real, proper week on Shnat and I think we talk on behalf of everyone in the group when we say it has been fantastic.

The last few days of Orientation, based in Beit Shmuel – in central Jerusalem the headquarters of Progressive Judaism worldwide – far surpassed our expectations of a week of ‘get-to-know you games’ and ‘rules and reg’ sessions that last years Shnatties had led us to believe would be the case. On Thursday we were taken on a 4-hour tour of the Old City by Amy Ben-Dov – a NFTY movement worker famous for the incomparable speed at which she talks, her intimate knowledge of Jersualem and her infectious enthusiasm. Every single person came out of the tour with a greater connection to Jerusalem; we all designated our own spot at the Western Wall and learned more than we cared to remember.

RSY-Netzer and Gilad Shalit

A well deserved hug

As we enter the festivals of succot and simchat torah, known as zman simchateinu, a time of celebration, RSY-Netzer is particularly happy for the family of Gilad Shalit who is due to be released by Hamas after being held prisoner for more than 1900 days.

Gilad was captured on June 25th 2006, a month short of his 20th birthday. As bogrim and madrichim of the movement we can relate to being that age. We run machanot, hang out with our mates, go to Limmud, Benicassim, watch the football, go to Uni, to the cinema, have boyfriends, girlfriends, argue with our parents. All this, and much more, has been denied to Gilad during his imprisonment and we hope and pray that he is able to come to terms with life as a free man, a citizen, no longer a captured soldier.

Bogrim opinions on the September UN vote

Last month the RSY-Netzer tzevet compiled responses from our chaverim regarding the UN vote on Palestinian Statehood. Below is a compilation of writings, thoughts and reflections from bogrim from a range of shicvot.

The UN Vote is one which has sparked many questions amongst groups of people. It has spiralled into debates between every day individuals to leaders around the world. It has been the reason for people breaking ties and causing arguments to people forming stronger bonds with each other over their beliefs and an area of land that has been fought over and sought after for years.

Leadership Opportunities In the North

Dear wonderful RSY-Netzer Madrichim,

The time has come once again for the Northern Netzer Venture Shabbaton, and we want you!

Netzer Venture is a two day (one night) event where young people aged 8 - 13 get to meet, have fun and generally get the RSY-Netzer vibe. The weekend is on Friday 4th November until Saturday 5th November and will be at Menorah Synagogue, Manchester. Anyone who has led on it before will tell you how much fun it is!

There are four roles that you are able to apply for:

Rosh - It will be your job to ensure that peulot and resource forms are handed in on time and the event runs smoothly. You will be working closely with the Northern Project Workers (Ben and Guy) to write a fun and exciting tochnit as well as writing the aims and objectives for the peulot.

Rosh Toran - Your role will be to buy and organise the resources for all the peulot. This will involve work pre - venture as well as during. You will be working closely with the Northern Project Workers (Ben and Guy) to ensure that everything you need is ready for the event.

Madrich/a - This role will involve writing and running peulot as well as close interaction with the chanichim. It is a lot of fun being a madrich/a on a Northern event!

Tabach/it - You will be cooking for both the Netzer Venture participants and the Northern Hadracha event that will be running on the same site. You will have a strong influence on the menu and direct influence on how it will be cooked. This role is essential to the running of the event!

The application form is linked below, please take some time to decide your role and fill it out. You do not have to be from the North to apply for any of these roles. We are willing to subsidise travel is you are coming from outside of the 'North' and cover your costs if you are coming from nearby.

Please send your form to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it by Sunday 7th October 2011

We look forward to receiving your forms soon!

Ben and Guy :)
